MOUNT MERU TREKKING

Climbing Mount Meru is a great and rewarding experience. You will experience amazing views of the crater, distant views of Kilimanjaro from the summit, see a lot of wildlife on the lower slopes (like walking safari) and it is for sure a beatiful experience in Africa!

The most valuable is the complete and accurate information about the routes, preparation and the climbs are led by experienced and proffessional mountain guides. We use professional, quality mountain equipment and food is plentiful and delicious. It is advised to book the climb in advance, because an armed ranger, guides and porters must accompany climbers.

View of Mount Meru

Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,566 meters (14,980 ft) and the fifth highest in Africa. During the ascent you have impressive views of Arusha National Park and the surrounding mountains. Mount Meru is often climbed in combination with Kilimanjaro but is also worth a trip on its own.

The ascent takes place via the south route and the descent via the north route. Overnight stays are in huts, which usually consist of four-bed rooms and are equipped with double bunk beds. All campsites are in direct radio contact with the management of the national park. The number of visitors to Mount Meru is comparatively low.

Momella route

First day is a long walk from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut, crossing a first section of savannah and tropical forest afterwards. No special problems, for there is an excellent trail and the ranger goes along with you. There is a variant going through the bottom of the valley, on the left of the ridge, which can be a little longer and leaves most of the climbing for the final sector before Miriakamba.

Mikiramba Hut camp

The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep climb. We slowly ascend through lush montane forest to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge. From here we enjoy excellent views of the summit ridge and across the crater floor. The path continues through giant heather and other fascinating moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m), where lunch is will be provided.

The afternoon is free to relax and to enjoy the views. The more energetic can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) for superb views just before sunset. (3-5 hours walking).

Saddle huts campsite

The second camp encountered along the only route to the summit of Mt. Meru, consisting of lodges/houses that are split into several dormitory style rooms. Each room is capable of housing up to 4 people, and there also is a mess hall, guide and porter accommodations as well as a camp ranger's office. No self contained rooms are available, and the camp is mostly used for accommodation by climbers on the second night of a 4 day trek to the summit. Except on special route variations, most climbers do not use this camp while descending. Most opt to rest at Miriakamba huts.
